The World Forum for Democracy 2026, a pivotal global democracy summit, hosted by the Council of Europe, invites international changemakers to a three-day transformative event in Strasbourg, France. Under the theme “Democracy at Risk: How Can We Revive It?”, this forum unites 1,000+ participants annually from 80+ countries to tackle democratic challenges, fostering 10,000+ global connections since 2012. Aligned with UN SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, Strong Institutions), it empowers policymakers, activists, and youth leaders to strengthen participatory governance through innovative initiatives at the Palais de l’Europe. Participants engage in plenary sessions, labs, and forum talks to spark systemic change.
The agenda addresses pressing democratic threats, including disinformation, economic inequality, civic disengagement, and digital manipulation. Forum Talks feature experts like Art O’Leary (Irish Electoral Commission) and Felix Arndt (Deutscher Bundestag), exploring media freedom, youth participation, and AI-driven disinformation. Labs showcase initiatives like Brazil’s Aurora Institute (winner), focusing on human rights advocacy and inclusive governance. The program offers 20+ hours of interactive discussions, with 85% of participants reporting enhanced democratic strategies. Workshops on prebunking disinformation and civic engagement platforms drive practical solutions, aligning with Europe’s 2030 Democratic Resilience Strategy.
Participants access pre-forum e-modules via world-forum-democracy, preparing initiative proposals with mentors from Council of Europe’s Directorate for Democracy. Cultural activities, including Strasbourg Cathedral tours and Rhine River walks, immerse attendees in France’s democratic heritage, with 90% reporting enriched global perspectives. Networking events, like Democracy Innovation Award ceremonies, generate 20,000+ social media engagements. The forum leverages AI-supported discussion tools, trending in global governance. Side events at European Youth Centre and Strasbourg’s Place Kléber foster community dialogue in Europe’s democratic capital.
Since 2012, the World Forum for Democracy has empowered global innovators like Michele Bravos, whose human rights initiative gained Brazilian TV coverage. Conducted in English with a 20–25-hour commitment, it ensures accessibility for international stakeholders. The Council of Europe Framework, rooted in inclusivity, participation, and innovation, is highlighted at Global Democratic Summits. The cohort aims to spark 15,000+ democratic interactions, advancing grassroots solutions, policy reform, and global collaboration. Participants explore Strasbourg’s historic vibrancy, engaging with Place de la République’s civic spaces and Petite France’s cultural charm, immersing in Europe’s democratic epicenter.
