The Stanford Summer Fellows 2026, a premier fully funded leadership immersion, invites global democracy champions to engage in a democracy and development hub at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. This three-week transformative program by the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) within the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), empowers mid-career leaders from transitioning nations to advance democratic practices, economic reforms, and rule of law. Launched in 2005 as the Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program, now renamed the Fisher Family Summer Fellows Program, it has trained 510+ fellows from 103 developing democracies, with a $5 million investment, receiving 2,500+ applications. Fellows immerse in Stanford’s world-class academic ecosystem, driving cross-global democratic synergy.
The democracy and development hub equips fellows to tackle global governance challenges, exploring topics like electoral integrity, judicial independence, anti-corruption frameworks, civic engagement, and sustainable development, with 90% reporting enhanced leadership skills (CDDRL Report, 2024). The program features daily academic seminars, TED-style talks, policy workshops, and Silicon Valley tech tours, with fellows producing 200+ policy briefs annually, shared at events like CDDRL’s Global Democracy Forum or Stanford’s Governance Summit. A virtual orientation introduces program objectives and Stanford’s interdisciplinary resources. Fellows engage with Stanford’s renowned faculty, including political scientists, economists, and legal scholars, to refine their strategies for democratic reform.
Fellows participate in Global Democracy Dialogues, virtual leadership forums, and in-person networking summits, connecting with peers from 50+ countries. The Stanford democracy odyssey includes Palo Alto innovation tours, San Francisco civic meetups, Stanford campus policy roundtables, Silicon Valley tech engagements with firms like Google and Meta, and Bay Area cultural immersions, fostering global governance networks. Partnerships with National Endowment for Democracy, World Bank, and UN Democracy Fund provide access to global policy ecosystems. Fellows contribute to international governance conferences, advancing cross-global reform goals. Programs’ Inclusive Leadership Initiatives host 150+ events annually, promoting diversity, with 47% female alumni.
Hosted in Palo Alto, a global innovation capital, the fellowship offers access to 500,000+ digital resources via Stanford Libraries, including Freedom House reports, World Justice Project indices, and UNDP datasets, to fuel leadership excellence. Since 2010, 400+ alumni have influenced policy as presidential advisors, senators, and NGO leaders, with 85% sustaining reform efforts. Plans to expand ties with African Governance Network, Eurasian Democracy Forum, and Latin American Policy Hub aim to grow 15,000+ collaborations. Conducted in English, with cross-cultural workshops, the program ensures accessibility. The CDDRL Framework aligns with UN SDGs, emphasizing justice, peace, and strong institutions.
