R-IH Summer Internship Program in Japan is offered to promote young researchers who are committed to work in the field of robotics. This fully funded internship program aims to direct interns to R&D in advanced robotics research by offering them a chance to work in Guardian Robot Project (GRP) research groups. These Research Teams include Knowledge Acquisition and Dialogue, Psychological Process, Interactive Robot, Multimodal Data Recognition, Man-Machine Collaboration, and Behavior Learning.

RIKEN is striving towards a future where AI, robots, and humans can coexist. R-IH internship program for international students promotes Research and Development for social application of next generation robots that include a blend of psychology, brain science, cognitive science and AI research. RIKEN research internship in Japan is open for students from all over the world in two categories. Type A is a Long Stay Program starting from July 24th to September 19th. Type B is a Short Stay Program starting from August 21st to September 19th.

Conventional robots have only been performing limited activities according to the commands they have been given by humans, but GRP aims to develop new robots that can independently recognize their surroundings and people and provide support without limiting human autonomy through relevant communication and interaction. Research theme of internship program for undergraduate and graduate students is “A robot that shows own hearts and coexist with us for a long time”.

Benefits of RIKEN GRP Summer Internship Program in Japan:

•Students will have an option to choose between Type A and Type B internship programs.
•One round-trip airfare or bullet train fare will be covered.
•Accommodation charges of JPY11,100 per day and JPY2,400 as daily allowance will be paid.
•All students will receive reimbursement of daily expenses of JPY393,900 for the first and second month.
•Applicants who are from universities which are within 50 kms from RIKEN will receive commuting expenses only.
•Students will book and pay for accommodation and cover the transportation fee between the accommodation and the RIKEN office from the daily allowance which will be reimbursed later.
•Reimbursement amount will be reimbursed according to RIKEN travel policy.

Eligibility Criteria for R-IH Summer Internship Program in Japan:

•Applicants should be undergraduate or graduate students.
•Applicants can be from Japan or overseas.
•Applicants should meet all the requirements of the program.
•Applicants must be from a university who’s in charge or can issue a formal letter of request and agreement on behalf of applicants.
•Applicants should be enrolled in their university at the time of application and duration the program as well.
•Applicants from universities that have collaborative research plan with GRP (Kyoto University, Doshisha University, Nara Institute of Science and Technology) cannot apply for this program.
