UN International Law Fellowship Banner

The UN International Law Fellowship 2026, a prestigious fully funded legal immersion program, invites global law trailblazers to engage in a Netherlands legal nexus at the iconic Peace Palace, The Hague, Netherlands. This 3-week intensive fellowship unites up to 20 legal professionals from developing and emerging economies to deepen expertise in international law and the United Nations’ legal frameworks. Organized by the Codification Division of the UN Office of Legal Affairs, the program has trained 500+ fellows since 1967, with a $5 million investment in advancing global legal cooperation. Fellows participate in interactive seminars at The Hague Academy of International Law, fostering cross-global legal synergy.

The Netherlands legal nexus immerses fellows in core international law domains, including treaty law, state responsibility, human rights, law of the sea, and international criminal law. Fellows attend morning sessions at The Hague Academy and afternoon lectures by the Codification Division, using resources like UN Treaty Collections, ILC Reports, and LexisNexis, with 95% reporting enhanced legal acumen (UN Report, 2024). The program features daily discussion forums, case study workshops, expert panels with scholars from ICJ or ICC, and networking sessions, with fellows contributing to 15+ legal dialogues annually. An orientation session introduces program goals and Peace Palace resources.

Fellows engage in Global Legal Dialogues, virtual law forums, and in-person networking events, connecting with peers across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and beyond. Netherlands law odyssey includes The Hague legal tours, Amsterdam policy briefings, Rotterdam UN workshops, or Utrecht academic retreats, with 90% reporting strengthened networks. Partnerships with International Law Association, European Society of International Law, and African Union provide insights into global legal ecosystems. Fellows receive a certificate of completion at a closing ceremony, advancing cross-global legal synergy goals. The UN Equity in Law Initiative hosts 50+ events annually, promoting diversity.

Hosted at the Peace Palace, a global hub for international justice, the program offers structured learning schedules and access to 250,000+ legal resources, including Westlaw, Hein Online, and UN iLibrary, to fuel legal excellence. Since 2010, 400+ alumni have influenced global legal frameworks, with 80% contributing to UN reports or journals like AJIL. Plans to expand ties with Harvard Law, Leiden University, and Asian legal networks aim to grow 3,000+ collaborations. Conducted in French, with English materials available, the program ensures accessibility. The UN Legal Framework aligns with UN SDGs.
